Why study abroad?

Studying abroad can be of benefit in many different ways: -

  • It can improve your confidence and broadens your personal experiences

  • It displays that you have an inquiring and proactive nature

  • It's an opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture and possibly become fluent in another language

  • It makes you stand out from the crowd and helps to improve your chances of employment both in the UK and abroad

  • It develops your confidence to live in another country

  • It develops an international network of friends.

Who can study abroad?

Students of almost any subject combination can apply to study abroad. This is at the discretion of their departments. Students must be in good academic standing with their departments in order to be considered and must pass all modules in their principal subjects to be able to take part in the exchange.

When can I study abroad?

Usually in the second year of your degree, for an academic year, or a single semester. Some departments prefer students to go for a semester, while others allow students to go for a full academic year.

Where can I study abroad?

Please open the following document for up to date information about Study Abroad Opportunities for Students 2008

An increasing range of courses at the European Universities are taught in English, which enables students to study there without the need to speak the host language. Of course, taking an intensive language course on arrival will help make the experience even more worthwhile.

Students can also opt to study under the ISEP (International Student Exchange Programme) which allows them to study in a wide range of countries worldwide.

How will I be assessed?

Exchange students are assessed in similar ways whilst abroad as they are at UCLan. Study undertaken and passed abroad will be credited to your UCLan degree. Therefore, a year abroad or semester abroad will not result in extending the length of time it takes to complete your degree.

How much will it cost?

If you attend a partner university in another part of Europe you are eligible for an Erasmus grant, which will be a contribution towards the extra costs involved. The grant will be approximately £220 per month. Additionally, students who take part in a year long Erasmus exchange will get their fees paid for the academic year. No tuition fees are payable to host institution.
