International Admissions Guidelines
1. These criteria are based on empirical evidence of how overseas students have performed at UK universities and are similar to those used in practice at some of UCLan’s leading reputable competitors.
2. They may differ from indications in NARIC. These are often out-of-date and frequently very conservative. One reason for this is that, historically, many NARIC advisers were UK-educated natives of the foreign countries concerned with a tendency to downgrade their own country’s qualifications. Over the past couple of years UCAS guidelines have moved away from NARIC to a position closer to real-life practice, but both remain dominated by the conventions at ‘old’ universities needing to find ways to eliminate applicants (who may be intrinsically viable) in order to match them to the number of places available. One specific problem which remains to be rectified is a significant over-evaluation of UK A levels by both NARIC and UCAS.
3. There has been no attempt to reflect difference in the UCAS points required for individual UCLan bachelors degree programmes. In principle, all such degree are of equal difficulty with the variation in UCAS tariffs being determined by supply and demand within home student admissions. This has no bearing on overseas applicants who are admitted outside the HEFCE quota. The general criteria cited for admissions to bachelors programmes are those considered comfortably viable for any UCLan degree.
4. The minimum criteria quoted for admission to masters programmes equate to a 2.2 honours degree
