International excellence rewarded

UCLan's fantastic level of support for international students has been recognised through a prestigious Times Higher Award for 2006.

Collecting the award on behalf of UCLan were Angela Murphy, Pro Vice-Chancellor, John Shaw and Isabel Donnelly from the Department of Languages & International Studies and Malcolm Faulkner, Chair of the University Board.

Up against four other institutions in the 'Outstanding support for overseas students category' UCLan has received recognition for its unique China Experience language programme.

The judging panel said:

"UCLan is one step ahead of most other institutions in recognising this and investing in a language programme designed to address the problem before students arrive."

"We were impressed with UCLan's investment this academic year in an English language and culture programme in China, where it has a large number of franchised courses."

Pat Killingly, director of educational services for the British Council, said: "The range of the programme is impressive, providing excellent support not only for language skills relevant to their subject of study, but also to UK culture and traditions and to the visa and other formalities of entering the UK."

She added: "Language and cultural adaptation are key for all international students but this is particularly true for students from China, for whom the linguistic and cultural transition can be particularly great."

Students are also supported throughout their programme of study by the Student Information Centre known as The 'i', which is a modern, state-of-the-art facility acting as a comprehensive student advice bureau and a point of referral for all enquiries.

Vice-Chancellor, Malcolm McVicar said:

"I'm absolutely delighted that the University has won this award - it is a tremendous accolade for the institution. This is testament to the team effort involved in international student support and I would like to thank the Language department and all staff involved in the extensive programme."
